The Location Independent Freelancer

About a year ago — maybe more — I happened upon a website that completely matched the way I thought of my life. That site was all about being location independent and designing a life that worked the way you wanted. I liked it so much, that I immediately adopted the phrase as part of my short bio on many sites.

Why Be Location Independent?

I think many freelance writers have that goal. Many of us work from home so that we can:

  • fit our working hours around family priorities

  • not be tied to the rigid schedule of an office

  • accompany our spouse on a work trip without having to make special arrangements

  • take a break in the middle of the day to meet friends, drink coffee, watch the soaps or get fit

The Freedom To Travel.

Those are certainly among my reasons for living the lifestyle that I do. For me, the ability to design my lifestyle to suit my priorities is a key part of being location independent. There’s also the possibility of travel. It’s true that I choose to spend most of the year in one place, but I can also take my writing business wherever I go. By the end of this year I will have visited Cancun, Chicago, New Jersey, Nottingham in England and who knows where else?

Promoting Location Independence.

So that’s why the Location Independent site resonated with me, and it’s also why I agreed to become the leader of one of their ‘street teams’ for spreading the word about location independent living. My area is freelancing, so in addition to the career advice I currently provide, I’ll be looking at how you can design your freelancing life to be location independent.

I’ll also be reviewing some of the resources available on the Location Independent site, such as their ebook and business course. And look out for an announcement about a fun project later this week.
