LinkedIn Company Pages: Yay or Nay?
For a while now I’ve been wondering whether I really need a LinkedIn company page and a showcase page. I’m always trying new web stuff (shiny object syndrome much?) so when LinkedIn offered me the chance to make those pages, I naturally jumped at it.
The only trouble is, I’m not sure what I get out of it. My profile is great and I use all the relevant sections. I think it represents me well.
The pages? I don’t think so. I’m not a big company, so I can showcase my services on my regular profile. Check out any of my recent roles and you can see examples of my work and recommendations. As a writer, do I need more?
Plus there’s the whole time management thing. One of the secrets to effective social media management is to pick the right places. That’s the places where people are interacting with you or where the people you want to talk to are already hanging out.
Another secret is to use the right tools. One of my favorite social media tools is Buffer, and it’s because I was meandering through my Buffer analytics that this started to crystallize for me. As far as the analytics are concerned, those pages might as well not be there. I spend my time on Twitter, my Facebook page, my LinkedIn profile and, less often on Pinterest and Instagram.
The only benefit I have got from the pages is the ability to occasionally sponsor an update. I’m not against social advertising. In fact, I’ve used Facebook ads on behalf of a non-profit and they have really boosted the non-profit’s visibility and reach. I haven’t had the same experience on LinkedIn.
It’s always important to know when what works for most people isn’t right for your own business. For me, using LinkedIn company pages is one of those things. I know they work for other people (goodness knows I’ve written enough posts on LinkedIn and conversions) but for now, I’m going to put my efforts elsewhere.
That said, I’m always open to new perspectives, so if you think I’m missing something or have a really good example of somebody knocking it out of the park with company pages, please share!
